The man, who is now seeking asylum in the European country, was identified as a 22-year-old Kenyan but his name is yet to be released to the public.
The stowaway reportedly hopped onto a Cargolux Italia-operated cargo plane that flew from Johannesburg, South Africa to Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, making a stopover in Nairobi, Kenya.
Investigations are underway to determine if the man hopped onto the plane in South Africa or at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya.
Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso said with his identity established, they shall now open a file to investigate the matter. In stable condition Immediately he was discovered, the man’s body temperature was raised at the scene and by the time an ambulance arrived, he was able to answer basic questions.
The baffled Royal Dutch Military Police spokeswoman Joanna Helmonds told AFP that the man was taken to hospital in stable condition. “It is quite remarkable that the man is still alive,” Joanna said.
Typically, it is very unusual for stowaways on long flights to survive due to the cold and low oxygen at high altitudes.
