Pastor Dorcas, the wife of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has opened a detention facility inside a wellness and rehabilitation center in Rumuruti, Laikipia County, to serve as a jail institution for minors detained for minor offenses.
Pastor Dorcas stated yesterday during the groundbreaking of the facility at Kandutura Ground in Laikipia that her office will work with the Judiciary and County governments to ensure the project is finished on schedule.
According to the second lady, the service will be useful in punishing misbehaving children, who will then reform and become valuable members of society.
“This place (Wellness and Rehabilitation Centre) we are going to do something that has not been done before that is going to be done by the national government, the county governments, and the judiciary where our children who are in schools and have been arrested in other petty crimes and they are in prisons, we want to have a detention center here,” she went on to say.
“We are going to do something never done before.” We want a detention center at the Wellness and Rehabilitation Centers for our children who were in school and were arrested for trivial offences like smoking bhang and are now in prison. They will join the others for rehabilitation. “By the time they finish, they will have contributed to society,” she remarked.
Among other things, the Wellness and Rehabilitation Centre will comprise a health facility, a rehabilitation center, a digital hub, a sports school, vocational training, and a prayer center.
Pastor Dorcas also indicated that those detained will be trained in farming and entrepreneurship so that they can support themselves after they leave the facility.
The center will also provide free therapy services to people with cerebral palsy and autism.
