Kakameza Homeboyz extended their unbeaten start to the season to 10 games with a 1-0 win over champions Tusker in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega on Thursday.
George Odiwuor struck the lone goal of the match four minutes into the encounter to ensure Bernard Mwalala’s charges go top of the standings on 24 points from 10 matches.
The win also saw the Kakamega-based side maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Homeboyz are not three points ahead of second-placed KCB, who have also played 10 matches.
Tusker’s Ugandan striker Deograttius Ojok, starting his second successive match for the first time this season, could have drawn the Brewers level on 19 minutes but his headed effort was cleared off the line by Brian Eshihanda.
Homeboyz also had Estone Esiye test Patrick Matasi in Tusker’s goal before the break.
The loss leaves the lethargic Brewers a massive 14 points off the top, although Robert Matano’s men have played two matches less.
Despite signing heavily during the offseason transfer window and releasing almost half of the players that won them the league last season, Tusker’s performances have been below par.
The team was knocked out of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup by Zamalek (Egypt) and CS Sfaxien of Tunisia respectively.
Tusker sit in unfamiliar 12th position on 10 points from eight matches, this being their fourth defeat of the season, having won thrice and drawn once.
The two teams now join others who played last weekend for a Christmas break. The league resumes on December 29 but will have another one week break to usher in the New Year with the 12th round scheduled for the first week of January 2022.
Both teams wasted chances with defender Daniel Sakari, who was playing in an advanced position, failing to put Tusker ahead from a clear chance in the first half.
